The project brings a campus card system standard and mobility to Higher Education Institutes in Europe for the first time. The project was heralded a major achievement in campus card technology by developing a prototype for a secure and standardized campus card system. Commenting on the technology and the award win Sinead Nealon, WIT Campus Services, said, “We are delighted with the European Award win for the research and development of this project, the award is a prestigious honor and the competition from across Europe would have been of a very high standard; I would like to commend the consortium team on the delivery of this project, who have worked tirelessly to make this the fantastic success it is. The technology itself is unique and on a day-to-day basis the card assists academic mobility through the electronic transmission of student data between the Institutes by providing a standardized interface between the campus card system and also provides access to other services such as the library, access control, time and attendance.” Supported by European Commission funding (FP7/SME), the EECS Project was undertaken in the period June 2009 to May 2011 by a consortium of six organisations located in four EU countries. The system is currently been installed in WIT in Ireland. It will also be installed in 5 other European Higher Institutions later this year as part of the live trial process. EUNIS is the European University Information Systems Organization; EUNIS brings together those who are responsible for the management, development and the policy for Information Technology in Higher Education in Europe.
