ECCA Conference 2025 - A Remarkable Success!

05.06.2025

The European Campus Card Association (ECCA) Conference took place at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany, from May 26th to 28th, and it was a remarkable success. Over 130 attendees from 20 countries gathered for this event, which featured a series of presentations and workshops led by expert speakers from Europe, Canada, and the USA. Several significant topics were covered, including the latest innovations in identification, the shift from physical to digital, campus card case studies, mobile devices and digital wallets, and a thought-provoking workshop on the future of digital credentials for students.

This workshop created a platform for various stakeholders to engage in meaningful conversations. Representatives from the Erasmus Student Network (Darwyn Bruelemans), higher education institutions (Alexander Loechel – LMU), service providers (Ewald Ulrich - ANA-U), Studierendenwerke Germany (Sven Engel), and tech companies like Legic (Felix Pütz) and Google (Mikhail Strunkin) came together to discuss the evolving landscape of student credentials. Key themes included the future of digital credentials and their potential to replace traditional physical cards. The discussions also highlighted how access to services for students and staff is often hindered by various barriers, stressing that this issue goes beyond technology to encompass legal, national, and institutional challenges.

A highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Klaas Wierenga from the GÉANT Association, titled "Enhancing Student Mobility: The Role of eduroam and the Future of Digital Credentials through the EUDI-Wallet." This presentation addressed critical aspects of modern education and technology, focusing on the concept of student mobility and the need for seamless educational experiences across borders. The session underscored the vital role of eduroam, a global Wi-Fi roaming service, in providing secure internet access for students and staff across campuses worldwide.

The exhibition area of the conference attracted numerous leading companies and technology developers, showing the latest hardware and software solutions. Notable participants included Ana-U, Elatec, Entrust, HID Global, KUARIO, UniNow, MagiCard, Evolis, Salto Systems, ISIC, Legic, ID-ware, SystemHouse Solutions, and CardExchange.

As ECCA continues to strengthen its influence year after year, this was especially evident at this year's conference. The next conference is set to be hosted by the Czech Technical University in Prague.
